Blackout Poetry

Last time you voted on what to do last lessons and the majority chose Blackout Poetry!

What is Blackout Poetry?

If you google, check Instagram or Pinterest for #blackoutpoetry you will find a lot of inspiration. Here are a few examples:

This is how you do it!

1. Choose a page from the book Ari and Dante that we read or find a text yourself.
2. Choose if you would like to work with paper and pencil or use a Google document. Your texts, pencils and markers you will find at my desk.
3. First, skim through your text and look for an anchor word. An anchor word is one word on the page that stands out to you because it is packed and loaded with meaning and significance. Starting with an anchor word is important because it helps you to imagine possible themes and topics for your poem.
4. Box words that stick out to you. After going through once, go back through your poem & find words that help your boxed words flow together to create your poem.
5. Plan out your words to form a poem before boxing in your words. Stick a piece of paper beside your chosen article/page and write the words you want to use. Once you have chosen the words, find other words on the article/page that can make your chosen words flow. Box in your words to create your poem.
6. Make a draft and show me your idea before you finish and use the marker.

If you would like to use your Chromebook you can use Google Docs like this:

Make Blackout Poetry with Google Docs:

1. Change the Page Color

2. Click File and select Page Setup, then select your new page colour and change it to grey.

4. Change the Page Colour to Black

Here is an example that I made in Google Docs. The title of the poem is:

TELL

Tell a friend. Tell people. Tell that somehow I was scared.
Tell them.

The original text is from Ari and Dante and I followed the guide above.

5. Be creative!
We will host an exhibition where you showcase and present your piece of art.
DEADLINE: Monday, the 5th of June.
The exhibition will take place on the 7th of June at 10 am.  Be prepared to present your poem.
* What is the idea behind your poem?
* Make it short and summarize your idea in about 5-10 sentences.

If you want to you can add a QR code to your poem with a song that describes the feeling of your poem.
The easiest way of creating QR codes is to use: Skapaqrkod.se/ and just paste the link you have chosen and click Create.
Take a screenshot of the QR code and paste it into your document.

If you chose to use paper and pencil. Just paste the QR code into a Google document and share it with me. Remember to tell me. I will print it for you and you can glue it on your paper.
