Create your own Mix-tape!

Creating mixtapes is a big thing in the book The Perks of Being a Wallflower.  Today I want you to create your own mixtape. During the lesson, I will show you how you create a mixtape in www.kaseta.co
To show you an example I created a mixtape for my daughter. Click on the picture below to listen to the mixtape.

1. Read the instructions in picture number 2.
2. Who would you like to give your mixtape? (Remember that you are going to show your friends and talk about your mixtape so don't make it too personal if you aren't comfortable with it.)
3. Create your mixtape!
Go to Chrome Webstore and add the Kaseta extension (tillägg till Chrome).
(You have to finish your mixtape as homework and hand in the link to me in Google classroom. Dead-line: Friday the 9th of November)

Writing

After reading part 3 -4

Work in pairs and create a mind-map where you answer the questions below and work with the structure of your blog post. I will help you in class. When you have finished your mind-map - show me! You will then write your text in ChromEX.

Imagine that you are Charlie, the girl or Dave and that you are 25 years old now. You think back about what happened. Write a blog post where you would like to draw attention to your blog.
- Use a headline that makes people want to read.
- Describe: what happened, where were you, who were there, how did you feel then and how do you feel now?
- Give advice: What would you like to tell young people to help them out of situations like the one you were in?
What could you have done differently?

What do you think society can do to help young people?

Write in Google docs, size 12 and minimum 150-200 words. I don't want you to use the internet to look up words and grammar. Use your brain!

Here you can find tips on how to write a viral blog post: https://www.shoutmeloud.com/secrets-to-writing-viral-blog-posts.html

When you think your text is finished, go through this check-list and take a look at your text again:

* Capital I ?
* are the verb forms correct? Past tense?
* is/are or was/were?
* has/have?
* paragraphs?
* Does the reader get to know the answers to the questions you find in the instruction?
* Does the headline draw your attention? Do you think you would have read your own text if you saw it published?

The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Eng 8C

The book we will work with for the next few weeks is called: "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and the author is Stephen Chbosky.

When you have watched the trailer above - discuss with your neighbour what you think the book will be about.

Have you ever heard the word "Wallflower"? What do you think the word means?

Take a look at the statements below. Talk to your neighbour about them and take notes if you agree or disagree with the statement. You need to be able to tell the rest of the class about your opinions.

1. Feeling like you are alone in the world with nowhere to turn to for support is a normal
part of being a teenager.

2. Learning how to make friends is more difficult in secondary school than it is in primary school.

3. The dangers of drug use by teenagers are exaggerated.

4. Your first serious kiss should be by someone you truly love.

5. If adults really knew what happened among teenagers on Snapchat and the
internet they would be shocked.

5. Experiencing new things helps teenagers develop emotionally and intellectually in ways
that reading a book can never match.

6. Getting involved sexually as a teenager can only make your life more confusing and difficult.

7. Brothers and sisters are closer to one another than parents and their children.

Let's read the first part together in class: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

After reading the whole book The Perks of... - writing

After reading the whole book

You have now finished reading the book The Perks of being a Wallflower
and your task is to write an additional chapter. You are going to write Charlie’s
last letter.
Think about:
  1. How does Charlie start and end every letter?
  2. Are the letters formal or informal?
  3. Does he use a language that is hard for youths to understand? Are there any
special words that he comes back to?
     4. Think about Charlie’s “voice” when he is writing - why does he write these
letters? What does he want to tell the reader? What is important to him?

When you write your letter follow this instruction:
  1. Choose a specific place and a specific time. Describe the scene and jump straight
into the scene. Example:
I woke up and jumped out of my cosy bed. I investigated the fridge to see if there
were any leftovers from yesterday’s party. I found a half eaten pizza and grabbed it
as I headed towards the shower.

  2. In the first part of the letter, you focus on looking back at something that has
happened to you. Describe something that Charlie sees, hears or feels in the scene
you have chosen. What you are writing needs to describe the feelings of the letter you are writing.

3. In the second part, you focus on what is happening to you now. Focus on something
positive and something that makes Charlie happy and hopeful about his future.

4. Make your character (Charlie) do something in the scene - you can make something up
if you want to. Remember to use a tone in your letter that wakes up the feelings of the reader.
Love, hate, anger, sadness? You choose.

5. Finally, write something about Charlie’s future. Remember to stick to the feeling
you wrote about before.

6. Finish your letter and check if you have followed the instructions above.
7. Grammar:
Are you writing your text in the correct tense?
Check your verb forms.
Have you written I with a capital I?
Is/are, has/have, was/were?
Spelling: Go through your text and check your spelling.
8. Share your text with a friend. I will tell you who your partner will be.
9. Read the text you just got.
  • Go through steps 1-5 above. Has the author followed the instructions?
  • Comment and give suggestions.
  • Do you understand what feeling the author is trying to describe? If not, give
  • examples to improve the text
  • Check the text: grammar and spelling.

9. Send the text back to your partner and hand it into me again.

Good Luck!
