Writing task- Skate Freak

You are going to write a personal narrative. Maximum one A4 page or 500-600 words - size 12. 
Hand in your text in Google Classroom when the lesson is finished. You only have the lesson on Thursday so you need to prepare your text at home. Create a mind-map and bring to school. You write your text during the lesson. 

1. Imagine that you are Dorf. 
You are now an adult with two children. Your daughter has, many times, asked you what happened between you and your mother. You decide to write a story where you tell her what happened, how you felt, why you think your mother acted the way she did and how your father reacted and felt. You also tell her if there was something that you could have done differently.

2. Imagine that you are Jasmine. 
You are writing a blog text where you describe what happened and how you felt when you went to the Ledges, the rocks.

3. Imagine that you are the mother. 
You know that you have two grandchildren and you feel that you need to explain why you acted the way you did when their father was a child. Write a text where you explain why you left the family, how you felt and how you handled the situation with your son. Is there something you regret? Is there something that you could have done differently?

4. Imagine that you are Hodge. 
You see Dorf outside the skate park. You decide that you need to show Dorf who is the king of the skate park. You bring Dorf to your own house and makes him skate from the roof.
Your parents have found out what you did and they are really angry with you.
Write a text where you explain why you acted the way you did, how you felt and what you could have done differently. Would it have been possible for you to still be the king of the skate park without being awful and mean to Dorf? How?

- Who is the story about?
- Where and when does it take place?
- Is there a "hook"?
- Is the text in a chronological order? How do you know?
- Can you find any sensory details? Give examples. 
- Can you find any words that describe what she feels like? Give examples. 
- Which is the conclusion?

- How can this text be improved? Give examples. 

Task number 2: 

Write your own personal narrative together in your group. One of you creates a Google document that is shared with the others in the group. Then you are able to write in the same document. Your text has to be finished at the end of the lesson on Tuesday.

When you think your text is finished - share it with the first name in the different groups.

Also give feedback on grammar and spelling. 

Is the text written in the past tense? Are the verb forms correct? 

When you are finished - go to the other group and tell them your feedback. Be nice! Remember that your group also will get feedback.

How to write a personal narrative...

  Personal narrative 

The teacher in the film is Adora Svitak. She was only 11 years old when she made this film. Watch her films on Youtube! 



  The picture Personal Narrative is from Scholastic Teachers. Use the picture before you
start writing. It will help you getting your story into a chronological order and to organise your ideas before you start.

Sensory details mean that you need to use words that describe what you see, hear, feel,
smell and taste! Words like this help the reader to get into the story and feel the way the characters feel.

2. Who is SLG? What kind of person is she? Describe her. 

3. What does "stalking" mean? Can you give an example? 

4. Dorf 's mother hasn't called or talked to him for two weeks. How does he feel? Add a quote that shows his feelings.

Decide who will be the leader, the word finder and the character examiner: 

Read until p. 24. Prepare your different tasks. When you are finished- record your discussions in Showbie and then upload them. 

The leader of the discussion has two main tasks: 
1. Lead the discussion and make everyone get the same space when it comes to talking. Make sure that everyone reports their task, find out whether anyone has any questions to ask about the text (i.e. if he/she has reacted to something, if the person doesn’t understand or finds anything less good) and ask if anyone has anything they want to comment on or add to the discussion. 

2. Make a short summary of the chapter/s that you have read. Choose two scenes from the text and ask questions to each scene for the group to answer and discuss. 

The Word Finder 
Look up and make a list of words that you find different, difficult, important or useful. (At least 20 words) Look them up in a dictionary and write an explanation in English for each word. Use Quizlet to create your word list. Help the group with the hard words. Share the quizlet with your friends. 

The Character ExaminerObserve at least two characters in the chapter. Tell your group about them. Add a quote that supports your experience of him or her. What do you like/dislike about the characters? Describe him/her. 

Talk about: 

Dorf is the new kid in school, and he’s having trouble making friends and fitting in. He misses the town he used to live in. It was much smaller and he knew more people. Being the new kid at school can be very difficult. Š As a group, brainstorm ways to help new students feel welcome in your school or classroom. Write a mindmap to help you. Discuss in English, record your discussions in Showbie and upload it for me to listen to.

Chapter 1-3 

Work in your groups. This week is the first name Leader, the second is the word finder and third the character examiner.

Today's task:

1. Download SHOWBIE
2. Join the classroom in Showbie by using the code that you can see on the whiteboard.

a. Who is the main- character? Describe him/her. What do you think about him/her and what kind of person is he/she?

c.. Dorf’s skateboard is very special to him. He says skateboarding makes him “feel in groove, totally chilled and high-wired at the same time” (ch. 1) What does he mean?

d. "If it is worth doing do it. If it's not worth doing, do it anyway" What does Dorf mean by that?

e. Have you ever done anything that you actually didn't dare doing? If you have - why did you do it and what did you do?

From today until the 4th of October we are going to work with Skate Freak.
You will work in groups and I want you to record what you talk about and also take notes. Use the app SHOWBIE. 
You will get questions and task to talk and write about later. This text is just to show you how we do it.

Skate Freak

The book that we are going to read is called Skate Freak. It is written by Lesley Choyce.

1. Take a look at the cover of the book. What do you think the book will be about? Write down three sentences.
2. Talk to a friend and tell your friend what you think the book will be about.
3. I will read the first chapter aloud.
4. Talk to a friend and summarise what happened in the first chapter.
5. Find 15 words or phrases from the first chapter that you don't know or don't know how to spell. Create your own wordlist in Quizlet.
6. Those of you who haven't finished your letters need to do that today.
