Prepositions of time and place - IN/ON/AT

 

1. IN — The Big Box (General & Enclosed)

• Time: Used for long, open periods of time where you can't see the exact beginning or end. Think of months, years, seasons, or large parts of the day (in July, in 2026, in the afternoon).

• Place: Used when something is inside a 3D space, a boundary, or a larger area like a room, a building, a city, or a country (in the classroom, in Stockholm, in a box).

2. ON — The Line or Surface (Specific Days & Flat Surfaces)

• Time: Used for specific calendar days and dates. If you can point to a specific square on a calendar wall, use ON (on Monday, on October 5th, on New Year's Eve).

• Place: Used for surfaces where things can rest flat, or lines/routes of public transport (on the table, on the wall, on a bus, on the floor).

3. AT — The Exact Point (Precise Times & Locations)

• Time: Used for precise, exact moments—like looking at a clock face or a specific holiday point (at 7:30 PM, at noon, at midnight).

• Place: Used for exact points, specific locations, or specific addresses where you are right now (at the door, at the bus stop, at school, at home).
